The Psychology of Beauty - Give Me Cosmetics

The Psychology of Beauty

Today marks International Self-Care Day, a day to recognise self-care as a foundation for health and wellness.

There are so many ways you can practice self-care and beauty is just one of them.

The beauty industry in itself is massive, from makeup and skincare to haircare and body care, but have you ever thought about why it exists?

The idea of beauty as a concept is subjective (beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say!), but there is data that shows a connection between beauty/ self-care and mental health.

Whilst it may have started as a purely evolutionary idea, nowadays beauty is enjoyed by many and holds a special place in plenty of people’s lives.

Let’s take a look at the psychology behind beauty and why it’s important to our mental health…

The Psychology of Beauty

At the beginning of the human race,  the concept of beauty existed for the purpose of attracting a mate and evolving the human species, but nowadays it's about so much more than that.

Now beauty is a self-care practice, a way to show ourselves love and feel confident in who we are. Studies have even shown that when you feel good in yourself, it helps build confidence and self-esteem, and who doesn’t want that?

While there is a strong connection between a lot of people’s perception of beauty and youthfulness, here at Give Me Cosmetics we believe that real is beautiful, so our products work to help enhance your natural beauty!

Beauty and Mental Health

Acts of self-care can help us feel more valued in ourselves like we’re important and that our needs are prioritised, and this is key to living a happy, balanced life.

When we feel this way, we feel more in control of our lives which in turn helps to prevent burnout. It’s all about showing yourself that you’re worth taking care of (which you are,) and this ultimately builds self-confidence and helps you feel comfortable in your own skin.

Being in this positive, confident mindframe can also be a massive help when going through difficult times, so next time you’re struggling, remember to give yourself some love.

Overall, self-care and mental health go hand in hand, and knowing this helps you manage stress reduce anxiety and depression, and increase energy.

From physical self-care like exercising to spiritual self-care like meditating, there are so many ways you can take care of yourself, and one of our favourites is some good old retail therapy!
