You know the drill by now, and if you don’t, where have you been?!
Not to worry, we’re here to help.
If you didn’t know, the sun is always, ALWAYS there, even if it’s feeling shy behind the clouds, just popping through the fog, or even trying to show up through the snow.
The point is, you should be protecting your skin from the sun no matter the season!
Let’s take a look at how the sun can affect our skin in each season.
How Does The Sun Affect Our Skin?
Before we get into each season, we’ve got a blog dedicated to how the sun affects our skin if you want more information on the ins and outs.
For a TLDR, here are the main ways the sun affects our skin:
Premature Ageing: The sun emits UVA rays which can cause wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of elasticity in the skin.
Some studies even show that up to 80% of how old someone looks is due to sun exposure.
Burning: Another type of UV ray is UVB rays which is what causes most sunburns.
Of course, we all know that sunburn is painful, but bad sunburns can lead to even worse skin conditions.
Darkening: Sunlight can cause the skin to produce more melanin, which can lead to darkening of the skin which leads to marks like freckles.
While this isn’t always a huge issue, there is always the possibility of these marks indicating sun damage, which can be a long-term issue for the skin.
Skin Cancer: And whilst it may seem extreme, it’s crucial to talk about the possibility of skin cancer.
With constant exposure to the sun without protection, its ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage our skin cells, causing skin cells to grow and divide rapidly, leading to things like skin cancer.
Now, of course, it wouldn’t be a blog about sun protection without our Broad Spectrum SPF50!
With a lightweight texture and quick-absorbing formula, this SPF fits seamlessly into anyone’s skincare routine.
It works to hydrate, moisturise, and protect your skin no matter what the weather!
As we look a bit deeper at each season, we’ve got some products to suggest using alongside our Broad Spectrum SPF50.
Summer
Starting out with a season we’re already getting excited about: Summer.
Typically, the sun is hotter and closer during the summer, so it makes sense that it’s probably SPF’s busiest season.
Of course, with increased sun temperature and exposure, it’s so crucial to be using SPF during this season.
Plus, summer brings about more opportunities for sunbathing, and holidays to hot destinations, so while you’re having fun in the present, remember to protect your skin for the future!
Top Tip: Always check UV indexes no matter what the season. These could be higher during the summer and most phones allow you to check this in their weather app!
Another thing that comes with summer is sweat, a lot more sweat…
And with sweat comes increased chances of clogged pores.
With that in mind, we’re recommending our Vitamin C Illuminating Duo!
Vitamin C is a well-known skincare ingredient which works to help control oil production in the skin.
In using these products you’re giving your skin more of a chance to breathe and reducing the chance of developing breakouts due to clogged pores.
Winter
Even though the sun may be the last thing on our minds in the winter, it’s very much still there.
UVA rays can penetrate clouds, fog, and glass, meaning that we can’t hide, even during winter!
But don’t worry, that’s where SPF comes in to protect.
UVB rays are slightly less dangerous in the winter, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a chance for them to damage our skin, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces like snow and ice (so get your SPF packed for that winter ski trip!)
The cold weather that comes with winter can also cause more dry, flaky skin and chapped lips, which can only be made worse by sun damage.
To combat those dry skin issues, we recommend our Hyaluronic Acid Cleanser.
This cleanser helps to deliver intense hydration to the skin, ensuring it stays soft and supple even in harsh winter weather.
Spring
Ah, crisp, spring days. Something a lot of us love, and the sun is partly to thank for that.
While we may not be able to feel it, it’s a lovely sight to watch its rays shine down on a fresh morning.
Even though the sun may not be blazing hot during spring it’s still…you guessed it…important to protect our skin from it.
Spring can also involve increased pollen counts which can trigger allergies which make the skin more sensitive and again, sun damage can make this worse.
Plus, fluctuations in humidity can impact skin hydration, causing dry, irritated skin.
Our range of sensitive skincare products is ideal for seasons like spring!
Autumn
Whilst autumn welcomes falling leaves and cloudier skies, the sun still exists behind them.
These clouds can lead us to think that SPF isn’t needed, but, of course, it is.
In fact, up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can pass through the clouds, so make sure to keep on top of your SPF application during this month.
Autumn is also a time when people start reaching for more exfoliating and retinol-based products to prepare for dry skin in the winter.
These products can make the skin more sensitive and vulnerable to the sun, so consider opting for softer, more gentle versions of these products.
Our AHA Glycolic Glow & Hydrate Skin Tonic is the perfect example of this!
It works to exfoliate away dead skin cells, preventing clogged pores and keeping the skin fresh and healthy.
Plus, it’s gentle yet effective, so you can protect and exfoliate your skin at the same time.
So, as we’ve said so many times, SPF is your skin’s best friend!
As we move forward into 2025, keep your skin safe through every season.
